Weight Loss Surgery Guide – Information You Can Use
from:Over the past couple of decades, there has been a weight-loss information explosion, most of it coming in a weight loss surgery guide provided by the various doctors and weight loss centers. While each doctor and weight loss surgery center has a specific set of rules, guidelines and suggestions for its programs, there are some common items included in just about every reputable weight loss surgery guide.
The most helpful guide for an individual will probably be the information received from face-to-face talks with a personal physician or with a medical professional at a weight loss surgery center. In fact, much of the information provided during conversations should also be in a printed weight loss surgery guide. When discussing weight loss surgery with a medical professional, it would be best to understand that there are several types of surgery used to address obesity problems.
Basically, the surgical choices include: restrictive surgery that limits food intake; malabsorptive procedures that isolate the small intestine from the digestive tract; and a combination of the two types. (Medical professionals are now advising against malabsorptive operations due to the risk of severe nutrition deficiencies.) Gastric bypass surgery is more complex, while laparoscopic surgery (lap banding) is less invasive. There are also procedures that remove excess skin and fat in the abdominal area (Panniculectomy).
Though the terms and exact descriptions may vary, in a good weight loss surgery guide you should find most or all of these items: information about weight loss surgery and how it affects quality of life; cost of surgery; treatment options; information on gastric bypass surgery; adjustable gastric banding surgery (lap band); diet and exercise programs before and after surgery; eating plans that reduce calories but allow most foods.
You may also want to include these items in any weight loss surgery guide you rely on:
• Tips to increase appropriate physical activity.
• Tips on healthy behavior changes that fit your lifestyle and culture
• Medical care and support available after surgery
• A plan for keeping weight off after you lose it.
Each individual should also take the initiative to put together their own weight loss surgery guide, with the help of doctors and other weight loss specialists. Ask if there is counseling available. Ask if you will be required to buy and eat special foods that can significantly add to the cost of any weight loss program. Does the weight loss program that includes surgery also help you with positive behavior changes?
Make sure you understand medical staff qualifications, who the supervisors are and what the risks are for your surgery. You should also be assured that the program's doctors will consult with your personal physician before, during and after surgery. In addition, you should ask for references and results. Ask how much weight other participants have lost and how long they have kept the weight off. Obesity can be a serious health problem. A weight loss surgery guide should provide serious help.
